Organisers of the Fastnet race have said 186 of the 271 competing yachts have retired because of adverse weather. Four sailors have been injured in the race - one was taken to hospital with a broken leg, while three have minor injuries, including cuts and bruises. The yachts left Cowes on Monday after the race was postponed by 25 hours for the first time in its 83-year history. The first yacht crossed the finish line in Plymouth just after 0900 BST. ICAP Leopard, a 100ft (30m) sloop, arrived at Queen Anne’s Battery after completing the 608 miles (978km) race via Fastnet rock. The 2007 field is the largest since the disastrous race of 1979. Seventeen sailors died in that event after the yachts were caught in a vicious storm off the south coast of Ireland.

Boss Martin Jol said he felt “rotten” after seeing his expensive Tottenham side slump to a defeat against Everton but believes they will come good. Spurs have spent £40m on players over the summer but began the season with a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland before losing 3-1 at home on Wednesday.
Jol’s side were booed at half-time against Everton and he told BBC Sport: “I feel as rotten as I did on Saturday.
“We will do better. It is a kick in the teeth but we will bounce back.”
Arctic sea ice is expected to retreat to a record low by the end of this summer, scientists have predicted.
Measurements made by the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) showed the extent of sea ice on 8 August was almost 30% below the long-term average.
Because the region’s melting season runs until the middle of September, scientists believe this summer will end with the lowest ice cover on record.
Researchers have forecast ice-free summers in the Arctic by 2040.
Setting up an Ubuntu installation on VMWare and ran into the usual ‘no root password set at installation’ problem.
It is a little different from most distros in that you don’t implicitly set the root password on install. If you launch a gui app that requires root access (like package manager) then you can use the normal user password you created during installation but that’s no good for su’ing. If you want to set the root passwd so you can su normally then:
sudo password
and entering new root password will do it for you.
