Ubuntu root password

Setting up an Ubuntu installation on VMWare and ran into the usual ‘no root password set at installation’ problem.

It is a little different from most distros in that you don’t implicitly set the root password on install. If you launch a gui app that requires root access (like package manager) then you can use the normal user password you created during installation but that’s no good for su’ing. If you want to set the root passwd so you can su normally then:

sudo password

and entering new root password will do it for you.
