FIX: Webilder error “The panel encountered a problem while loading “OAFIID:GNOME_WebilderApplet”.

If you get this Webilder error after updating to Jaunty as I did then you can fix as follows:

1. Backup the webilder.conf file:
cp ~/webilder/webilder.conf ~/webilder/webilder.conf.bak

2. Edit the webilder.conf file as follows - change line 20 from:
webilder.installation_date = time.struct_time(tm_year=2009, tm_mon=9, tm_mday=1, tm_hour=10, tm_min=34, tm_sec=56, tm_wday=1, tm_yday=244, tm_isdst=1)
to:
webilder.installation_date = (2008, 10, 26, 12, 25, 1, 6, 300, 1)

3. Save the file and retry adding the panel applet. All should work fine!

HOWTO: Remove desktop mounted volume icons in Ubuntu

I got tired with having the cool desktop images that Webidler digs up for me being hidden behind a sea of icons on my desktop and had a clearup. However I couldn’t remove the icons for mounted volumes without unmounting them so dug up this command:

gconftool-2 --type boolean --set /apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible false

HOWTO: Install Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon

1. Enable the universe repository
sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list
Find and uncomment the following lines
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper universe main restricted universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe

2. Install ruby
sudo apt-get install ruby ri rdoc

3. Install rubygems
sudo apt-get install rubygems

4. Install Rails
sudo gem install rails
NOTE: If you get, as I did, an error at this point:

uninitialized constant Gem::GemRunner

then the fix is:
sudo vi /usr/bin/gem
After the line require ‘rubygems’ add the line:
require 'rubygems/gem_runner'

5. Test installation
cd
rails testapp
cd testapp
./server start

Open a browser to http://localhost:3000 and you should see the rails welcome page.

You can remove the testapp with:
cd
rm -fr testapp

Blair - Porn Baron’s Puppet

Just love this entry from Wikipedia - now Rupert Murdoch, I can understand how he had his hand up Blair’s arse pulling the strings (no-one gets elected these days with out his nod) but Richard “Dirty” Desmond? Owner of “Asian Babes”? In Downing Street? Seriously - was Blair a fan? Still - I can understand the requirement for some of Dirty Des’s reading material aimed at mother thumb and her four daughters given the unfortunate looking Mrs Bliar… gives a whole new meaning to dirty dossier.

“A Cabinet Office freedom of information response, released the day after Blair handed over power to Gordon Brown, documents Blair having various official phone calls and meetings with Rupert Murdoch of News Corporation and Richard Desmond of Northern and Shell Media.

The response includes contacts “clearly of an official nature” in the specified period, but excludeds contacts “not clearly of an official nature.” No details were given of what subjects discussed. In the period between September 2002 and April 2005, Blair and Murdoch are documented speaking 6 times; three times in the 9 days before the Iraq war, including the eve of the March 20 US and UK invasion, and on January 29, April 25 and October 3 2004. Between January 2003 and February 2004, Mr Blair had three meetings with Richard Desmond; on January 29 and September 3 2003 and February 23 2004.

The information was disclosed after a three and a half year battle by the Lib Dem Lord Avebury.Lord Avebury’s initial October 2003 information request was dismissed by then leader of the Lords, Baroness Amos. A following complaint was rejected, with Downing Street claiming the information compromised free and frank discussions, while Cabinet Office claimed releasing the timing of the PM’s contacts with individuals is undesirable, as it might lead to the content of the discussions being disclosed. While awaiting a following appeal from Lord Avebury, the cabinet office announced that it would release the information. Lord Avebury said: “The public can now scrutinise the timing of his (Murdoch’s) contacts with the former Prime Minister, to see whether they can be linked to events in the outside world.”"

EU fines Micro$oft record $1.4bn

The European Commission has fined US computer giant Microsoft for defying sanctions imposed on it for anti-competitive behaviour. Microsoft must now pay a record 899m euros ($1.4bn; £680.9m) after it failed to comply with a 2004 ruling that it abused its dominant market position.

The ruling said that Microsoft was guilty of not providing key code to rival software makers.

EU regulators said the firm was the first to break an EU anti-trust ruling.

There’s only one club in London!

Tottenham came from a goal down to beat Chelsea at Wembley and win the Carling Cup after extra-time. Jonathan EoodgateJonathan Woodgate won it when Petr Cech disastrously punched the ball on to his head from Jermaine Jenas’s free-kick.

Pascal Chimbonda had hit the bar for Spurs, before Didier Drogba’s 20-yard free-kick gave Chelsea the lead with Paul Robinson badly out of position.

Spurs levelled when Wayne Bridge handled in the box and Dimitar Berbatov coolly rolled in the resulting penalty.

“Mad” Mike Turner Begs for Taxpayer Cash

Mike Turner, CEO of BAE Systems was out today cap in hand begging for more taxpayers cash to help fund his weapons of mass destruction.

Mr Turner said the government must find the money for planned weapons programmes or risk Britain losing the industrial capability necessary to defend itself, The Sunday Times reported.

Turner’s comments come as the Ministry of Defence struggles to resolve a 1.5 bln stg budget crisis that threatens several big defence programmes.

‘If you want to keep a defence industrial base, and operational sovereignty in the UK, then you are going to have to fund it, and research and development. If you don’t do that, you are dead,’ said “Mad” Mike in an interview with the paper.

He failed to mention how he feels knowing his companies products are directly responsible for millions of deaths a year - nor did he feel he should comment on Teflon Tony’s decision to drop the SFO investigation into the bribes made by his company.

Tony Blair “stepped over the boundaries of what was permissible”.

Discredited former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, put “irresistible pressure” on investigators and “stepped over the boundaries of what was permissible” to call off a criminal investigation into allegations of corruption surrounding an arms deal with Saudi Arabia, the High Court here has been told. The Court is hearing an appeal from two anti-arms campaign groups — Corner House Research and the Campaign Against Arms — who want the investigation to be resumed.

The case relates to accusations that BAE Systems, Britain’s biggest arms supplier, paid more than £1 billion in bribes to members of the Saudi royal family to clinch a £43-billion defence deal in 1985.

Prince Bandar, son of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and former Ambassador to Washington, is among those accused of benefiting from the alleged “kickbacks.” The BAE as well as the Prince have denied any wrongdoing.

Illegal downloaders ‘face UK ban’

Internet PolicePeople in the UK who go online and illegally download music and films may have their internet access cut under plans the government is considering. A draft consultation suggests internet service providers would be required to take action over users who access pirated material via their accounts.

If made law the insane proposal would give ISPs, the UK government and any corporate entity free reign to inspect downloaded packets and prevent individual’s access to the internet.

Spurs stuff Arsenal in cup Semi-Final!

Spurs stuff Arsenal in Carling Cup Semi-FinalOoooh yeah mamma! The gooners don’t like it up ‘em as evidenced by the raft of lame excuses eminating from Arsenal after their piss-poor performance in the Carling cup semi-final last night.

A pulsating Tottenham performance saw them run riot against Arsenal to book a place in the Carling Cup final.

Spurs got off to the perfect start when Jermaine Jenas angled in a shot to put them 2-1 ahead on aggregate.

Arsenal’s Nicolas Bendtner then headed into his own net before Robbie Keane’s 18-yard shot put Spurs 3-0 up. Continue reading ‘Spurs stuff Arsenal in cup Semi-Final!’

HOWTO: Install ProFTP on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

I couldn’t get this working in inet.d mode but here’s what I did to get it working in standalone.

1. Install ProFTP
sudo apt-get install proftpd
2. Edit proftpd.conf
sudo vi /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf
Make sure that ServerType is set to standalone and that you have your chosen hostname in ServerName.
ServerName myftphost
ServerType standalone

3. Make sure you have the same host name in you /etc/hosts file
sudo vi /etc/hosts
It should read something similar to:
# IPv4
127.0.0.1 localhost
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx myftphost
#
# IPv6
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback myftphost

You should then be able to start the server with:
sudo /etc/init.d/proftpd start

Warning on rising Med Sea levels

The level of the Mediterranean Sea is rising rapidly and could increase by up to half a metre in the next 50 years, scientists in Spain have warned. Rising Sea Levels

A study by the Spanish Oceanographic Institute says levels have been rising since the 1970s with the rate of increase growing in recent years.

It says even a small rise could have serious consequences in coastal areas.

The study noted that the findings were consistent with other investigations into the effects of climate change.

HOWTO: Install Flash 9 on Ubuntu 64-bit

Having tried Gnash but found some problems I decided to install Adobe Flash but ran into an error with the installer:

Your architecture, \’x86_64\’, is not supported by the Adobe Flash Player installer.

Not too helpful… I browsed around a bit but found that most of the solutions involved copying the plugin files manually however this didn’t work until I happened on additional step. So the solution for me was:

HOWTO: Install IE on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

So I’ve been running a Dell M1330 under Ubuntu now for a few days and it’s sweet :) No problems found so far and compiz flies along using the Intel X3100 (GM965 chipset). Who needs NVidia huh? Me I guess as I still can’t get Eve Online to play nicely under Ubuntu although it runs sweetly enough in Vista.

Anyway - today found me having to access a test tool that only supports IE, another case of somebody assuming the world revolves around Windows. I’m running Virtualbox with Vista no problems but for some reason the ActiveX control wouldn’t install under VBox so I decided to give IEs4Linux a go.

1. Open a terminal and install wine and cabextract
sudo apt-get install wine cabextract

2. Get the latest version of IEs4Linux
wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads

/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz

3. Extract and run
tar -xvzf ies4linux-latest.tar.gz

cd ies4linux-*

./ies4linux

This will run a cool little app that will download the required packages from Micro$oft. It had a problem installing Flash for me so I unchecked that box but IE installed no probs and left me with an icon on my desktop. The ActiveX control also ran without issues.

4. (Optional) Donate a couple of buck to Sérgio to say thanks!
